In the Time That You Gave Me

Over the past two years, especially the last year, I have been reminded how precious life is. Being sick with a chronic infection that can be terminal can change ones perspective. It makes each moment matter. It makes you live and love the life and  people God has blessed you with that much harder.

It also makes you cling to Jesus in a deeper way than ever before. Ever since I have been young I have desired to live for Jesus and put Him first above all else. As different areas of my life occurred I have experienced the Lord in deep ways, but nothing like the past few months.  When it seems like all you have has been stripped away, you can fully focus on Jesus with no distractions. It has made me see Jesus in a different way — really see Him, and in the hard of the past couple of weeks that has been such an encouragement to me.

  • My emotions have been all over the place lately because in the last two weeks pI began hospice care in my home, and then was transported to Mercy Hospital for what we thought was a bowel obstruction.  While I am thankful for Hospice, and the wonderful care they provide, it still makes me sad that I am now a candidate for their services. The hope is that I can be released, and won’t need them after a few months. I do not know what the future looks like healthwise for me at the moment  but I will share what I do know. I apologize for the lengthy explanation but I value your prayers and encouragement. I’ve had a lot of questions about what is going on so I wanted to share it with you. I know it can be confusing getting little updates here and there so I hope these makes sense.
  • I have a chronic bladder infection that is not curable due to the nature of my bladder from Cerebral Palsy, but the antibiotics I am taking are working well at keeping it down. However, I am to stop this treatment in one month and then re-evaluate treatment options then. Also, there is a chance that these antibiotics will stop working before then. The main goal is to keep it from going sepsis again and for me to have a better quality of life. Bladder infections can change extremely fast so while today it may be holding its own I could wake tomorrow needing to go to the ER. Sadly, we have exhausted a lot of treatment options already and another surgery is not likely. I see my urologist in October but I’m praying he has a cancellation before then. Many of you have asked about me receiving second opinions, and I have but due to the specifics of my case Dr. K in Charlotte is the one most qualified in the state to help me. There are other places out of state that I could try but my insurance doesn’t cover out of state medical care. Although even if I could get a consultation out of state, they would most likely come up with the same conclusion.
  • Also, we know that just like my bladder I have a lazy bowel which is why I had my colon removed  in 2015. Once that got under control my bladder problems started to worsen and now I’m having issues again with my bowel. I spent almost five days in the hospital last week treating my bowel issues. Initially, the radiologist said  I had an obstruction and ileus but  Dr. Dobson said it was my neurogenic bowel being sluggish and not moving properly. Even my digestive system is a bit sluggish but since things are backing up  that is causing a lot of fluid retention. Thankfully things are working better since the hospital, but there is no easy fix and these flare ups could happen more and more.  I am going to see my gastroenterologist in Charlotte at the beginning of June so I am praying and hoping he has suggestions on how to best maintain things and keep them from getting even worse. I am retaining a lot of fluid which is very uncomfortable. I’ve been on medicine for that but it is not working as well as we would like it to. I have spasticity from CP and that makes my muscles tight and now that is worse because of. the fluid. All that together makes walking and moving extremely difficult for me and when I do move I require lots of help due the muscle issues and being weak. I have gained so much weight from the fluid and also cannot wear a lot of my clothes anymore. But like my doctors and parents remind me, this is out of my control and I’m doing the best I can.

Unfortunately there are no easy fixes for any of it, and it has been terminal before and unless a miracle happens it will be terminal again. We just don’t know how soon. It could be weeks, months, or years, but that is for God to decide. No matter what doctors say, God is the decision maker and I will not leave earth before it is my time. Life can change in the blink of an eye which makes me desire and pray for those who do not know Jesus as their Savior and Lord. It hurts my heart to think of all the good people in this world who will not go to Heaven when they pass away.

So much joy is missed if you don’t know the Lord. The more suffering I experience I can’t imagine going through these same trials without God. Without God I think I would have given up long ago and become bitter. Thankfully though, God has carried me through everything.

On to a more cheerful note, if you know me well then you know that I have a deep love for music.  For every season I’ve gone through  I have at least two songs that represent life during that time. When I hear a song where the lyrics could have been taken from my journal, I immediately thank God for that glimmer of hope. Not to sound sappy, but God truly does know the way to my heart. It may be just another simple song to some, but to me it is the encouragement God is giving me that day.

Lately, my music of choice has been Joey and Rory, MercyMe, and Ellie Holcomb. However, mainly I play Joey and Rory’s and Ellie’s albums over and over along with MercyMe’s latest single, “Even If” (thanks to one of my dearest friends Casey Rumswinkel for first introducing me to that song and to Sara for gifting Ellie’s album to me. These sweet girlfriends of mine know me well).

A few months ago Casey texted me a link to it and said “You need to listen to this.”  For whatever reason I did not listen then, but a few days later I remembered and listened. The message hit me in the deepest area of my heart. Similarly during that same time, I heard the song “You Love Me Best” by Ellie and oh my word it made me cry all kinds of tears.

God knows me in the deepest of ways and He does love me best.  Nothing can lift one out of the pit better than God showing them evidence that He truly sees them. What a gift it is to be known in that way.

Another one of my favorite tunes right now is by Joey and Rory from their “Hymns That are Important to Us” album. This is the song that inspired the blogpost for today. When recording the album Joey was battling cancer that took her life soon after the album was released. Her dream before dying was to complete the Hymns album, and every song on it is beautiful. One song in particular that has become a favorite is called “In the Time that you Gave Me.” This has become one of my theme songs for this season, and for life in general. The meaning of this song has taken me to another level of appreciation considering my circumstances.  The lyrics talk about the hope of living and loving life in the time we are given on earth. Its simple and realistic message reminds us to live for the Lord now, and make the most of each day He gives us. We are not promised tomorrow so that is why it is important to love Jesus and live well now. No one is perfect but if we strive to live for Him, God will use us and be glorified.

For me that is my only goal and desire — to love Jesus above all else and to serve Him well in the time He gives me.

I will leave you with one of my favorite lines from the song. Also, click the videos below to hear the songs that have been mentioned here.

Favorite Music Friday – Ellie Holcomb

God uses music to give my heart peace on the hard days. My favorite album of 2017 so far is “Red Sea Road,” by Ellie Holcomb. God knew what my heart needed when He brought this gem my way. Thanks for gifting it to me, Sara! There is not one song on the album that is not good. They are all equally amazing. One of the main themes of the album that I take away is God’s peace, strength and comfort during the trials of life. God is a God who makes the impossible possible and provides a Red Sea Road for us in our dark times! Thank you Jesus! Each song is my favorite Find You Here, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made, Red Sea Road, and We’ve Got This Hope, and You Love Me Best.

This album is the perfect music to carry you into the fall. Listen and be encouraged.

The View Looks Fine from Here – Some Monday Encouragement!

Happy Monday. A while back ago my friend Casey texted me the video for MercyMe’s latest song “Even If,”  and it has become my theme song during this season. Music encourages my heart so much and I feel like I could have written this song. It is like the lyrics have come out of my own journal. If you need a pick me up today take a listen to this. I promise you it will make your day better.

Also, be  sure to check back tomorrow for the next post in the Nehemiah Series!

Music For My Soul

Happy Friday. Lately, I’ve been listening to hymns and one I have recently had on repeat is “I Need Thee Every Hour” from Joey and Rory Feek. Joey is one of my favorite voices and I could listen to her sing continually. Music has always been deep comfort for my soul, especially if I’m in a difficult season and my view seems bleak. When I’m having a hard day, Joey’s hymns are the first thing I think of. I can play her music and as I sing along and listen to the lyrics written about the Savior, my mind and heart instantly calm. I am so thankful for how the Lord ministers and binds up the wounded heart through music. It is such a gift to me, and many others.

My other favorite comfort music comes from Amy Grant. I don’t think there is one song of hers I dislike. Years ago when I had numerous surgeries I remember listening to Amy Grant songs over and over again on my cd   Walkman before the iPod days. Even then, the words of timeless hymns was a balm to my young heart. I would  always keep “The Collection” album by Amy on repeat.

I do not know what you are facing today but I want to leave you with the hymn, I Need Thee Every Hour.” Take some time to stop whatever you are doing and listen to the words and allow God to bring rest to your soul. My prayer is that it will encourage you like it has me this week.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Last fall, I started a weekly series on Nehemiah, but due to health issues failed to finish it. Although, I plan to start again next week so stay tuned for that.

Thanks again for all the continued prayers for me and my family. They mean the world to us and we are so thankful for you!

Circle of Love

” Circle of love, halo of light. When Jesus was born on that Christmas night, and oh what a night, that holy night was, when Bethlehem glowed with a circle of love.”

If you know me, you know that I love Christmas movies, and for the last two years NBC has aired two movies written and produced by Dolly Parton. Both movies were inspired by true stories from Dolly’s childhood. The first one was called “Coat of Many Colors” based on the song that shared the same name. The second one is “Christmas of Many Colors:  Circle of Love.” Dolly’s family was poor and didn’t have many earthly possessions but they were close to one another, and shared the love of Christ. These movies act as reminders for us today regarding what is most important. We would all benefit by learning a few lessons from Dolly and her family.

In the first one, Dolly’s mom made her a coat using old patchwork material. She treasured it and thought it was wonderful but her peers made fun of her. The experience upset and embarrassed her at first, but as she matured she was proud, and wore it each day acting as if it was the latest fashion. That coat was more than a coat, it represented the sacrifice and love of a mother. Throughout the movie, the Partons endured much suffering but the best gift to the family was Dolly’s Father accepting the gift of Salvation. This was a true miracle, and an answer to prayer.

The second movie focused around Christmas again, and the family seemed closer to the Lord and each other more than ever before. However, money was tight and getting Christmas presents for each other was a real sacrifice. Dolly and her siblings decided to come together, earn money, and help buy their mother the wedding band she wanted. They were even willing to give up their own gifts so they could do this. This was such a reminder of selflessness and loving one another. Most children (or even adults) would not do what the Parton family did, especially with such a joyful spirit.

These movies shared truths of what is most important, but in the society we live in today those standards and values are no longer respected. The most impressive fact during each movie was the emphasis the writers put on Jesus Christ, and everyone’s need for Salvation. Dolly shined the light of Jesus and didn’t tone down the Gospel message even once. This is a rarity, especially for a network such as NBC. The movie dwelled on a simpler time and shared with us the priorities of loving Jesus, family, and others. The movies also portrayed great humility and selflessness. Those principles can never be taken away no matter how rich or poor someone is. By living with these attitudes peace and joy will fill your hearts.

Careers, money, or extravagant things won’t last forever, but loving Jesus, family, and others with a humble heart and mind will never fade.

We live in a world of hustle and carry the mindset that portrays “it’s all about me,” and the entertainment industry feeds this attitude. However, that makes for a miserable and chaotic life.

As you go through December spend some time loving Jesus and adopt His heart for others. Ask God to give you wisdom on how to best love and encourage those around you. Live in and accept God’s love because that is the best gift of all.

Visit here for more information and to watch the movie online, and be sure to watch with your family.

Happy November!

IMG_0448

November is here! This year is flying by and soon we will be ushering in 2016. However, before then we still have a couple months of 2015 to enjoy. November and December are my two favorite months of the year, especially November. I always get excited for the month of November to arrive because that means the holiday is season is nearing. Below are some of my favorite things about November.

  • Cooler weather – I love the crisp cool air and that I am able to start wearing my scarves and UGG boots.
  • Holiday Movies – Yes, I am one of those people that start watching holiday movies in November. I just cannot help it. They get me in a festive spirit. ( For those interested, New Hallmark holiday movies start this weekend ;)).
  • Christmas Music – Christmas music makes me so happy! Amy Grant’s Christmas albums are always a personal favorite. I always have them on repeat during the holiday season. Also, Chris Tomlin just released a new Christmas album called “Adore” that I am actually listening to as I write this.
  • Holiday Coffee – It is officially the start of my favorite season at Starbucks.  I am already stocked up on their “Thanksgiving Blend,” and I cannot wait for the “Christmas Blend” to become available.  It is so good.
  • Last but definitely not least — Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and it is my favorite day of the year. My mom always cooks a huge meal and all of the family comes to our house. Mom is an incredible cook so the food is always amazing and it is wonderful to catch up with family and spend the day hanging out with them.

What are some of your favorite things about the month of November?

Day 20 – Music For the Hard Days

IMG_0262

Last week I shared books and television shows that encouraged me on the hard days, so today I thought that I would share some of my favorite music that has recently brought me joy.

“Little Songs” – Jon Guerra

I think was  my theme music for the summer and now it is carrying me through fall. Why did I wait so long to listen to his music?? So good! The songs “Nothing Better,” and “Wherever You Are”  always lift me up on the crappiest of days. Also, he has a new Christmas album coming out soon with his wife Valerie, and I know it will be amazing.

“Let It Be Jesus” – Christy Nockels

One of my favorite albums that released this year is “Let it Be Jesus” by Christy Nockels. Ya’ll, it is amazing! If you do not have it do yourself a favor and download it. Each day I am discovering a new favorite from the album, and most importantly this music takes me to the feet of Jesus every single time. The theme of the album truly is Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. In this season of hard, God has used this album to comfort and encourage my soul. My favorite songs currently from this album are: “My Anchor,” “Everything is Mine in You,” and “Jesus, Rock of Ages.”

RUN WILD, LIVE FREE, LOVE STRONG by For King & Country

71OHtRgdk-L._SX522_

This is probably one of my all-time favorite albums and the music on this one has gotten me through some of the toughest times this year. Luke from the band has had some serious health problems the past couple of years and several of the songs from this album was written from that season of his life. Those songs have ministered to me greatly and if you are going through a rough patch, I think they would encourage you as well.

Some of my favorite songs are: “Shoulders”, “Without You”, “Steady”, and “Fix My Eyes.”

Happy Listening! 🙂

God is Faithful

IMG_0380

Happy Friday, friends. Yesterday, I posted about gratitude, and last night I was reminded yet again about how much I have to be thankful for. I have been home bound for the last year or so due to health problems and about six months ago, I honestly did not think I would live to see another day. But here I am, and I am so thankful.  Around a month ago, I remembered that one of my favorite artists, Laura Story, was going to be performing at The Billy Graham Training Center at The Cove.  I knew that if I could physically make it I wanted to be there. However, when I called to order tickets I was told they were sold out but would be put on a waiting list. I was bummed, but did not think much more about it until Monday when I got a call saying they had two tickets available if I wanted them.  I purchased them, and prayed all week that my body would cooperate so I would feel like going. God was gracious and gave me the strength to go, and I am so glad He did. It was a night focused on worshipping the Savior and was a great reminder to my soul of God’s faithfulness. God is restoring my life and even in the hard continues to prove Himself faithful to me every single day.  His power is unfathomable and His mercy is unending. He loves and listens to even the smallest desires of my heart, and knows my love language better than any person ever could. I think sometimes we get so caught up in the big picture that we lose sight of the little gifts God gives us.So as I head into this weekend my mind is focused on the goodness and majesty of the God I serve, and am grateful for the progress He has made in my journey. Jesus truly has done the miraculous in my life so instead of getting worried and stressed about the future of my health and life, I am going to focus on the good of today. His power is truly sufficient in my weakness, and is also sufficient for whatever you may be going through as well. Take some time to seek His face and don’t miss out on thanking him for the little blessings He has brought your way. He is and will always prove to be faithful.

Pictured above is the beautiful view from the cove, and me with my dear friend Natalie. So thankful for her friendship and the encouragement she brings to my life.

Little Mercies

unnamed

In my last post, I talked about feeling restless and God’s peace. Through His peace, God has been reminding me daily of things to be thankful for that I like to call “little mercies.”  No matter how mundane or hard our lives may seem at the moment, because of Christ we always have something to be thankful for. This summer I have decided to start journaling more and be intentional about recording these little mercies each day. This exercise helps me keep perspective when things seem otherwise gloomy. I would like to share some of my “little mercies” from today, and challenge you to take a moment to consider and be thankful for the little mercies God is bringing your way.

– My sweet Savior Jesus Christ

– Awesome parents who I consider my best friends

– Dear friends who I can share life with and who love, listen, and pray for me when times get hard.

– Nurses who daily help make my daily life easier during this season

– Jon Guerra’s new album, “Little Songs.”  I think this is my theme music for the summer now. Why did I wait so long to listen to his music?? So good! Favorite songs are “Nothing Better,” and “Wherever You Are.”

– Psalms – I have been reading through them lately and they are a balm to my soul. Psalm 91:4 has greatly encouraged me the last couple of days. It states, “He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.”

– “I Come Quietly To Meet You” Devotional by Amy Carmichael – Later in her life, Amy some serious health problems that left her homebound for years.

– Diet Sundrop – What can I say? I am addicted to this soda. I am definitely a Carolina girl and this is my summer treat.

– My pool –  which is my favorite dwelling place for the summer especially over the last week or so during what feels to be the hottest time of the year. Also, it has been a great form of exercise for me as I have been recovering.

Okay , now it is your turn. What little mercies has God given you this week? Think and pray on that this weekend.
