Time with God

Nothing or no one can satisfy the

Hello sweet blog readers. Lately I have been struggling to have time with the Lord. Since I’ve been sick and during my recovery process, my schedule has not been consistent and when I lay down to sleep each night I remember–“Wait, I didn’t spend time with Jesus today.” I know the Lord understands sickness and circumstances that may not always allow you to spend extended amounts of time in the Word. However,  God desires us to put Him first in whatever way that looks like in our present circumstances. In different seasons our quiet time can change, but God asks us to do what we are able to do in that moment, and gives us the grace to do so.   I have lots of extra time at home right now so I need to use it by sitting at the feet of Jesus and soaking up His word instead of spending my time doing trivial activities to entertain myself.

I recently began reading “The Cross and the Switchblade,” by David Wilkerson. I am not too far into it yet, but his story is powerful. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it. In the book, David tells a story about how he loved watching “The Tonight Show” each night once all of his family had gone to bed. That was the one activity he enjoyed doing to unwind. One night he was convicted about needing to spend more time in prayer, but thought that he didn’t have more time in his day. However, that was until God reminded him of the calm quiet hours that he stayed up watching television. God began leading Him to give up that time of tv watching, and spend it in prayer instead. Since David was the only one in the household who watched television he told the Lord that he would put an ad in the newspaper advertising that his tv was for sale. If it sold in the first half hour of the newspaper releasing then he would give it up.  Well guess what? Within the first 29 minutes the television sold, and David began to use that time each evening for prayer and communion with the Father. It was hard for him at first but he would tell you that it was worth it.  I want to clarify that I am not saying we should all sell our televisions and never watch them again, but I do think we need to make spending time with Christ the most important part of our day. Therefore, if television, movies, reading, social media, activities, etc are taking us away from Him then we need to adjust our priorities.

I can tell when I am not spending enough time with the Lord because my mind starts to be anxious, and I start to worry and fret over every little thing. I also start to feel discontent and not satisfied with life. This is not how the Lord intends for us to live. He wants us to enjoy being with Him, and live in the freedom that He gives us each day. Nothing or no one can satisfy the longings and discontentment in our hearts, except for Jesus. We think we can fill ourselves up on worldly things, and that will give us the satisfaction we need, but that only leaves us wanting more. Jesus desires for us to come to Him each day, seek, and get to know Him. He is ready and waiting to be our beloved and best friend. So will you join me daily by spending time with your Savior? It doesn’t have to be a long time each day. God knows you’re heart and what you are able to give so give the best of every day to Him and you will not regret it. Make Jesus your treasure.  Below are some tips that I have found helpful over the years in spending time with God and I hope they encourage you as well.

Read the Bible – Daily Bible reading books are a helpful resource in this. Also, Apps like YouVersion and She Reads Truth have different plans you can choose from to read each day. Also, John is a good place to start and Psalm 119 is one of my personal favorites. So much truth there.

– Prayer Journaling – Write out your prayers to God. This helps you stay focused and journaling is also a good way to remind yourself of God’s faithfulness.

– Devotionals – Nothing should replace the word of God but doing devotionals can be a helpful addition to your Bible reading each day. Some of my favorites are: My “Utmost For His Highest” by Oswald Chambers, and “A Lamp Unto My Feet by Elisabeth Elliot.

Also, I am currently going through the book, “To Live is Christ,” by Beth Moore that highlights the missionary journeys of Paul, and it has been amazing.

Grace Upon Grace

 

Out of His fullness we have received

As most of you know by now, I am recovering from a couple major surgeries from back in January and February. It has been a long journey since then. Because of complications with my ostomy, I have have had recurring bladder infections, and these infections have been making me very sick. Like in the bed all day, I don’t want to move, kind of sick. This has been happening over the last couple of months and on Friday I woke up with the same heaviness that I always feel when a new infection is starting, and I knew it was going to be a rough day. So for the past few days I have not felt the best, but it is in these times that I feel the Lord’s strength and grace the most. When I have no strength left He is there ready for me to take from Him. I have had the song, “When it Hurts (Praise Song)” by Hillsong United on repeat this week. Some of my favorite lines from it are, “Even when my strength is lost I’ll praise you/Even when I have no song I’ll praise you/even when it’s hard to find the words louder then I’ll sing your praise.” This has been my prayer to the Lord for days.

I have also been reminded in the last few days of John 1:16 which states, “For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” Grace upon Grace! I just love that. It is never-ending and there is always enough supply for whatever circumstances we are facing.  I know I am not the only one struggling today and I am praying for you my sweet reader. If you haven’t done so today, take a moment and reach out to Jesus. Pray for Him to give you His strength and to lavish you with His grace upon grace. I promise you that He will not disappoint. He will meet you right where you are and give you His peace to get through your current situation.

If you think of it would you please say a prayer for me tomorrow morning? I have an appointment with my urologist in Charlotte. Please pray for them to give me some answers regarding what is going on, and are able to provide me some help and relief. Thank you so much, friends!  I am so thankful for you all.

Set Apart Girl Conference

For the last three years I have been a part of The Set Apart Girl Conference presented by Leslie Ludy and Ellerslie Mission Society. The conference takes place in Windsor, Colorado this weekend and while I am not able to travel to Colorado right now, I am able to tune in via live simulcast in my home here in North Carolina.

The conference is for women of all ages who desire to come away with Jesus and soak up His word for the weekend. Each year I come away from the conference feeling energized and refreshed and I am sure this year will be no different. This conference is one of the most Christ-Centered conferences that I have ever been a part of. Leslie and her team do everything possible to make every detail about Jesus. The two day conference is packed full this year with wonderful speakers including Nancy Leigh DeMoss (Revive Our Hearts), Leslie Ludy (Founder of Set Apart Girl), Annie Wesche (Creative Director of Set Apart Girl), and more. The theme this year is “Undivided Heart,” and I am looking forward to sitting and listening to the wisdom of these ladies and most importantly hearing from the Lord.

Update on My Recovery

As many of you know I had my colon removed on January 23 because my bowels had shut down. The past year has been extremely hard for me. I stayed super sick, and was looking forward to this surgery because I knew after recovery I would start to feel better. Going into this I knew it was going to be tough, but had no idea that when this began how hard things were actually going to be. I am glad I didn’t because if I had known everything that was going to happen I wouldn’t have entered into this so easily. Following surgery , I stayed in the hospital for five days. However, things did not go well when I returned home. After being home for one day I became extremely sick and had to go back to the hospital where I was told that my intestines had not woken up yet. Nothing was working. This was the start of some long and difficult weeks. During this time, I was fighting for my life. There were several times we thought I wouldn’t make it but the Lord’s grace and strength kept me going. Two weeks into the hospital stay we thought things were improving but then things took a turn for the worse. I started having terrible pain that I have never experienced before and we soon found out that this pain was being caused by two blockages. On February 18, I had another surgery to remove the blockages and was told my small intestine was in the shape of a pretzel. Thankfully, following the second surgery I slowly began to improve, and was finally able to return home on March 3. That was such a beautiful day for me because for a while I thought I would never see home again.

This journey has humbled me in so many ways and made me completely depend on the Lord. He has revealed in so many ways that His grace is always sufficient in weakness, and I am so thankful for that. This process has caused me to appreciate the life God has given me more than ever before, and to appreciate the little daily joys I am given.  Even though I am at home, I have a long road ahead with my recovery. I am still not able to stay by myself so I have to have someone stay with me and help me do everything. I am so thankful for the help that God has so graciously provided, and for my wonderful parents who have been with me through all of this and taken such wonderful care of me. I am also thankful for Evelyn the sweet lady who stays with me during the week, and for the team of nurses that come weekly to help care for me. At first, it was hard for me to accept all of this help but the Lord has used it to humble my heart and to help me draw nearer to Himself.
Many of you have asked how you can pray for me in this season. Please pray that God would continue to heal my body and give me the strength and energy to take care of myself. Also, I just started a new medicine for my blood pressure. Please pray for this to work well, and I am hoping to start outpatient Physical therapy soon so prayers for that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!  Please let me know how I can pray for you!
I want to thank all of my friends, family, church, and community who have prayed, visited, brought food, gifts, and provided encouragement for my family. I could never thank you all enough. We love you!

Daily Inspirations – September 2, 2014

Happy Tuesday! I am currently reading “The Hiding Place” by Corrie Ten Boom and was encouraged this morning by a statement from Corrie’s sister Betsie. It states, “There are no ‘if’s’ in Gods world. And no places that are safer than other places. The center of His will is our only safety.” I pray that this brings hope and security to you today. Remember no matter what you may be facing that you are never alone, and are always secure in Christ.

Wisdom From Elisabeth Elliot

The past few weeks I have been struggling a bit health-wise, and it has been rough. However, this quote I read recently from Elisabeth Elliot has brought much encouragement to me, and reminded me to keep trusting the Lord. I am so thankful that no matter what trials we face, He is strong enough to get us through them. All He wants is our trust.   I pray that whatever you are going through today that this nugget of truth will be a good reminder for you as well. 🙂

My Story – A Look into My Walk of Grace

Here is my story – A Look into My Walk of Grace

“Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice” (Philippians 4:4).  That is one of my favorite Bible verses and one that I have tried to live by my entire life. However, that has not always been easy. I was born three months premature, and because of that developed a disability called Cerebral Palsy. Living with CP over the years has definitely been a challenge, but Christ has been with me every step of the way. I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior when I was eight years old, and that was the best decision I have ever made. Thankfully, I am blessed to have parents who love Jesus Christ more than anything else, and have always been an example of Him to me. In the years to come, it was that strong faith, that carried us through.

Up until I was in the fifth grade my life consisted of school, physical and occupational therapy, and a multitude of surgeries.  I did not live the same type of life that the majority of kids my age lived, and went through a major depression in my elementary/middle school years because I did not understand why I was different.  My CP affected the way that I walk, and I am required to use arm-crutches for assistance. Because the other kids my age did not understand this, they would choose not talk to me and make fun of me. I would come home every day in tears, but when I started to mentally comprehend Christ and His character, and see myself as a true daughter of the King, my perspective changed. A passage of Scripture that has always encouraged me in this is Psalm 139: 13-16 which states, “For you created my inmost being,  you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful and I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in that secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”  I began to realize who I was IN Christ and I no longer worried about what others thought. My main desire became to know Christ better with each day and live a completely surrendered life for Him. I knew that God had a purpose for my life and that purpose was greater than any struggle that I would face.

2 Corinthians 12:9 states, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” My life is a continued evidence of God’s grace. Doctors told my parents that I would never graduate high school, but because of Him I did, and went on to graduate college. It has been God’s grace that has sustained me through all of the adversity I have faced as an adult in society and the work force. It is also because of God’s grace that in all of my daily health challenges God gives me the strength to serve Him in a ministry that I love, and to rejoice in Him day after day.

God daily reminds me that I am not alone in my suffering, and that it was because of His suffering on the cross that I am able to live this beautiful life. God has called me to a life set apart for Him, which means living a joyful life always no matter what comes my way.

God has always used the example of Paul in scripture to encourage me. Paul experienced many hardships and sufferings while following Christ, and Scripture tells us that he dealt with a “thorn in the flesh,” but through it all he remained joyful. Paul tells us the secret to this joy and contentment in a letter he wrote to the church of Philippi. Philippians 4:11-13 states, “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content in whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether fed or hungry, whether in plenty or in want. I can do all things through him who gives me strength.”   Throughout my life I have learned that  no matter what is going on in and around you, you can still have joy even in the worst of times. That is when Christ can shine the most. It is easy to get caught up in what we want, and be selfish. It is also easy to think that a joyful life is defined by a series of happy moments and fulfilled desires. However, life is really defined by the work Jesus Christ is doing in you, and how He allows the “not so good moments” to mature you. In some of my hardest seasons of life I have experienced some of my sweetest moments with Jesus.

Everyone of us, no matter who we are, have struggles. However, we are called to glorify God with the life that He has given us. I want to encourage you today to not let your circumstances define you and steal your joy. Be thankful for what God has given you. Know that He loves you and created you for His purpose. Spend time reading His word daily and ask Him to give you His never-ending joy.   If you do this, the weight of your worries will lessen, and life will suddenly seem brighter. Be encouraged that in His presence there is fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11), and that God works out all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

Forgiving Others, Forgiving Me

 

forgiving-others-forgiving-me-352x545My good friend Renee Fisher just released her fourth book a few days ago called, “Forgiving Others, Forgiving Me,” and I have to say it is some of her best work yet. When I  read this book I felt like I was reading pages out of my own journal.  In this, she shares her story, her struggles, and her own journey with forgiveness. Renee states, “I had been writing in my journal every night since my life fell apart. My skin was covered in rashes, the medication had caused me to gain one hundred pounds, I dealt with crippling bouts of anxiety and I lost my first love. I needed healing, God did heal me, in a big way. God came alive as I wrote to him, and it was there in my journal that I found what I was searching for —forgiveness.”
