Prayers For Houston

The devastation that is occurring in Houston breaks my heart. So much destruction and the damage is not over. I have been glued to the television coverage and the scenes from the hurricane keep playing through my mind. Folks who have spent their whole life in a place only to find they have to start all over again. It’s hard to know where to start in the recovery process because how does one proceed when they have nothing left.

Also, as someone living with a disability, my heart goes out to those with disabilities being rescued. For some, not getting medical supplies in a timely manner is life-threatening in addition to the danger from the flooding. I use tons of medical supplies per day, and have never been without what I’ve needed. So often we take for granted that others may not be as fortunate, especially In situations such as Harvey. The disabled are often overlooked because they can’t help themselves and the workers don’t know how to help or understand what they need. Thankfully, organizations such as Portlight are working with rescue teams to make sure the disabled have what they need. In addition to medical issues, basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter dominate the area. While many are reaching out to help, there is so much more to be done.

It is hard to know why God allows such tragedies. There are no words to describe the amounts of suffering that is being experienced, and to look in the face of such need it is hard to see how good could come from this. However, as I was watching tv the Lord reminded me that in those dark places and in the flood, He is there. He weeps with each person offering comfort and does not take delight in their suffering. We live in a fallen world where unfortunately bad things happen, but the Lord promises to give His people the strength to carry on. When one has literally nothing left and no one to turn to, Jesus is right there ready to love and lead the way. As I’ve pondered over these truths, I realize that some might read this and roll their eyes because it’s easier said than done especially seeing the enormous amounts of destruction.

What the people of Houston need now more than ever is people to come alongside them and provide for their needs –a warm meal, clothes, a place to sleep, healthcare, a shoulder to cry on, and someone who will listen to them as they grieve for what will never be again.

Rescues are still taking place and today I watched someone being pulled out of the water by a helicopter and multiple rescues using boats and other resources. Seeing these actions take place is humbling, sad, and hard to watch. Although, I have been very impressed by how the workers are doing all they can to help rescue these folks, and most of them are people they do not know.

Also, Police officers and other workers have been working for days not stopping because they fiercely love their community. Another humbling fact is that many workers have lost everything themselves, but are choosing to put other people’s safety before their own. The love of Christ is being displayed through every person risking their lives to to save another — in every rescue, through the volunteers, and in the donations from around the country. It is encouraging to witness every heroic act of kindness.

These days there is much division in our country over politics, race, and religion. That being said, at the end of the day we all need each other. As folks have united over the last few days these issues no longer seem as important. The most important focus is rescuing and helping our fellow Americans who are in need and trying to survive. When a boat comes along and rescues a family, political or social backgrounds do not matter. They are not dwelling on if the people helping are conservative or liberal, but are thankful that someone came to save them. They are thankful not to be forgotten and that someone showed up in their time of need.

Circumstances like these help give perspective on life, and the way people have come together to love and serve their neighbor will be remembered forever.

One story that has touched me is that of Police officer Steve Perez. He was a police officer in Houston for 34 years, and left his home on Sunday morning to do his job. His wife did not want him to go but he said that there was “work to be done.” Sadly, he drowned in his car and found days later. Officer Perez loved the Lord and was committed to sharing His love with others. His wife said that he would not have wanted to die in any other way. He loved his job and the city of Houston. His priorities were to serve and protect them, and what a way to enter into Eternity. He lived life doing what he loved with no regrets. and his servants heart is an example we all should follow.

Regardless of our circumstances we are to love God and love others – considering others before ourselves. Over the next few days think about how you can support Houston. Whether that be going there and volunteering, donating money, or sending supplies, every little bit helps.

Pray for Houston as they begin to move forward recovering and rebuilding from this. Pray that God provides abundant resources and that the entire city be surrounded with love and encouragement.

My prayer for the Houston community comes from Psalm 91 which says, “If you say, The Lord is my refuge, and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands.I am so thankful that no disaster is too great for God and that we can always take refuge in Him.

Words of Wisdom from Amy Carmichael

If you have followed my blog for a while then you knew  that one of my favorite women is Amy Carmichael. Even though she did not live during modern times, I feel that she and I relate in many areas. As I read her different devotionals I feel as if I’m reading from the pages of my journal. I am so thankful for the words of wisdom that she had brought to me, and how God has used her life to minster to my heart. Aside from Scripture her words have been a balm to my weary soul..  Amy is the perfect example of using what God has taught her in both the joys and trials to share with others the love of Jesus. She lived to completely glorify Him until the day she died, and I am so thankful that her legacy lives on today.

Amy was a missionary in India for many years, but later in life dealt with physical illnesses and suffering that left her homebound. During that time she wrote about things that the Lord was teaching her. Last night I read this quote from her that helped put things in perspective for me. She states,”Above all there is this, look at Calvary. Look steadfastly. Take time to look and all within you will be hushed. For power streams forth from Calvary. We never need to know defeat.”

Wow! When I read that it reminded me of what Jesus did for me on the cross and that I am not alone in my suffering. There is nothing that I am experiencing that Jesus can’t relate to, and He is always by my side offering His comfort and strength. I do not know what you are facing today but whether it is joyful or sorrowful, take time to dwell on Calvary and take comfort in the healing presence of Jesus. As Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble, but take heart I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33). Praise God for that promise, and for the gift of Jesus,. With  Him we can make it through anything that comes our way.

No Man Is An Island

I think one of the things God uses for encouragement to someone going through any type of trial is surrounding them with friends who lift them up when they are weak and loving them right where they are. We see community played out in the Bible, most importantly through the trinity – God, Jesus His Son, and the Holy Spirit. That should be the foundation of any relationship we have. Communion with God should be first above all else which allows the Holy Spirit to guide us throughout our days. Loving Christ well helps us love others well, and gives wisdom in how to best love the suffering.

The best type of friend to someone suffering is one who just shows up. It doesn’t take fancy offerings or a formal visit. Those are appreciated and kind, but most of the time the person needs their friend to just be with them in whatever way that looks like at the moment. Whether it’s a phone call, a visit, or someone who brings a meal so the caregivers don’t have to cook — these are practical ways to help in the day to day.

No matter how I feel company always lifts my spirits as well as my parents who are my care givers. As my mom tells people you don’t have to call or plan ahead, just come by when you have a free moment. My parents are suffering as much as me and need just as much encouragement and prayers as I do. Outside of work they spend most of their time with me which proves the point that no man is an island.

 

Our trials have a tremendous effect on those around us whether we like it or not. So many times we let pride take root and think that we don’t need other people, and that is not true. There are some weeks I don’t see outside of my bedroom so conversations and any connection to the outside world is needed. I treasure my phone calls, FaceTime chats, and visits from my friends. They keep me sane. Even though most of my close friends don’t live nearby I’m thankful to talk with them daily which provides me with my own sense of community. It may not be how others experience community but this works the best during this season. I’m continually grateful to have friends who encourage and constantly pray for me. I have a small group of friends that have been with me through thick and thin and no matter the circumstances they are always there for me. We have prayed together, cried together, and laughed together. The last few weeks I have been too sick to talk on the phone most days and some days texts and audio messages are all I’m able to do but my friends are always gracious and understanding. Friendship is a gift from God and I’m grateful for the friends He has surrounded me with.

Also, just because someone is suffering doesn’t mean their friendship with others should be halted, or only focused on the one experiencing the trial. Often times friends think they can’t share what is going on in their life because they think what they are going through is not as crucial and they do not want to be a bother. I’ve seen this played out so many times. I can understand why they might feel that way, but for me personally that is not true. Yes, I am sick right now and yes I need my friends. However, life goes on and I’m not the only one who is struggling. It is not all about me, and friendship goes both ways. I want my friends to share their life with me as they always have and want that aspect of our friendship to stay the same. Instead of growing friends apart, if handled correctly, trials can grow friends even closer. Some of the sweetest times of my week are hearing what is going on in my friends lives –hearing funny stories/seeing pictures about their kids, or about the vacation they took, or the new job they just started, and how I can pray for them, just to name a few. I’m not able to go out and experience life with my friends but I love it when they send pictures or videos from the day to day in their life because in a small way it makes me feel like I’m there. Last October when my best friend Sara got married I was too sick to come to the wedding so they FaceTimed me in. Of course I would have rather been there in person but that was the next best thing, and I’m so thankful to Sara and George for being intentional to make that happen.

For all who are reading this I don’t know what you are experiencing or what your loved ones may be going through but you are not alone. If you are going through a trial do not be afraid to share. By sharing you open up the door to not only be encouraged but also an encourager to someone going through the same thing. If you know someone who is experiencing suffering right now ask God how you might can encourage them. Whether it’s a person struggling with a disability/chronic illness, an elderly neighbor, a young mom, or care givers of the sick, ask the Lord how you can practically encourage them in their time of need. One of the best ways to get through a hard week is to spend time praying for and encouraging others because it takes your mind off of yourself. I have found that serving others for Jesus is the best balm for a weary soul and a broken heart. I pray that whatever season God has you in that you are able to not only find comfort in His love but that you comfort others.

Set Your Mind on Things Above

 

Happy Wednesday friends. It’s the middle of the week and I pray wherever you are that your week is going well. In my time with the Lord lately the following verse from Colossians 3:2 has been coming to mind. It states,“Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.”

 So much of a persons joy and contentment comes from our perspective. It all comes down to what we are feeding our minds with each day. For example, is your days spent worrying and fretting over the “what ifs” in life, or are you surrendering those thoughts to the Lord? Are you watching, reading, or listening to anything that triggers discontentment or envy?  It is easy to allow our minds to be filled with worry, stress, anger, etc., especially during a difficult season. At times you may wonder why you cannot get certain thoughts from your minds, or why you cannot feel God’s presence in a situation. However, if we are dwelling on the things of this world, that can  produce in us discontent, fear, and worry.

I love HGTV and shows like “Fixer Upper,” “Rehab Addict,” etc. In and of themselves they are not bad, and may seem harmless. Although, if watching them makes you discontent or envious with what you have then you may need to reevaluate your viewing habits. Another example is if you are constantly afraid and filled with fear regarding certain situations — are you watching shows that make the fearful thoughts in your mind worse? Are you reading books that keep your mind in a constant state of fretting?

One last example is one that I have been guilty of in the past has to do with Facebook and Pinterest. It is so easy to scroll through the feeds and begin comparing yourselves to others. These social media outlets tend to help folks make life look picture perfect, but nobody’s life is perfect. When it seems like others have the perfect house, the perfect health, a wonderful husband, etc., it can stir up thoughts and feelings in our hearts before we know what hit us. These outlets are not bad in themselves, but if we allow them to grow seeds of jealousy, discontentment, and bitterness then it is time to take a step back from them.

This post is part of “The View Looks Fine From Here” series that I started last week. Being homebound and bedbound leaves a lot of time for me to dwell on life and thoughts like never before. Some days I do not even leave my bedroom and  “view” is not very exciting. Because of this, I try to be guarded in how I fill my mind. Life is hard and dealing with a chronic illness everyday is not easy. I learned a long time ago that if I was going to have the right mindset during these circumstances that I needed to be guarded with how I spent my time — what I am watching, reading, listening to, etc. I am sick enough without adding in worries, discontentment, and jealousy. My days and suffering are so much easier to deal with when I am focusing on ” the things above,” and not on my current circumstances.

Below are some questions I came up with a couple years ago to help me with this, and I recently found them, and been using them again.  I pray that they help you keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, and that you allow His peace and joy to fill your hearts and mind daily.

Questions to Ask Ourselves:

1. Are the television shows and movies I am watching glorifying to the Lord? How do I feel once I’ve watched it? Does it make me have sinful thoughts or attitude?

2. Does the music I listen to glorify the Lord? Does it cause me to want to draw closer to Him or does it make me discontent? Does it change my perspective for the better?

3. Does the books and magazines I read glorify the Lord or do they bring negative thoughts to my mind?

4. Does the conversations I engage in glorify the Lord or myself? Does the words I use affirm others or tear others down?

Also, below are some Bible verses that have helped me along the way regarding these areas, and I pray they encourage you as you focus your gaze on Christ, and surrender to Him daily.

Bible Verses:

Philippians 4: 8-9 – “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

Romans 12:2 – “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Proverbs 4:23 – “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”

Ephesians 4:22-24 –  “To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”
