One year ago today I was told news that changed my life forever. Over the past couple of years my health had been slowly declining, but in the summer of 2014 it took a turn for the worse. Last July, I got really sick and stayed nauseated all of the time. A lot of days I could not even get out of bed. I went to my family physician and she did a bunch of tests one being a CT Scan of my stomach, but according to the radiology report nothing major showed up in the scan except for gas. So fast forward to October 8, 2014 when I visited my urologist in Charlotte.
That day started out with a migraine and I almost didn’t go to the appointment because I felt terrible and figured that this visit would meet me with no answers as the other ones had. It turns out I was very wrong. When the doctor came in the first thing he said was, “What are we going to do?” “I don’t know,” I replied. To which he said, “We are at the end of the road.” I then asked him what he meant by that and he told me my colon had shut down and anything we did from this point forward would be “grasping for straws.” I was stunned and confused as to how he knew this because he had not done any recent tests, and he assumed I already knew this information which was one of the reasons I was there.
However, it turns out that he had viewed the CT Scan from July, and it indeed did reveal more than just gas. My mom was with me that day and we both sat there in a state of shock and confusion. We were in the office a couple more hours as they explained all of the options that could be next. They were talking about doctors I would need to see and complications that could occur. Because of surgeries I’ve had previously, and other health problems, finding a surgeon willing to treat my case and do surgery was going to prove to be a difficult task, and one that seemed almost impossible. We know from scripture though that nothing is impossible with God and even though I went home that day feeling more overwhelmed than I had ever felt before, God’s peace surrounded and carried me through what was going to be a very difficult road.
One year later by God’s miraculous healing and strength, after life threatening surgery, and almost six weeks of being in the hospital — I am still alive and on the other side of this long journey. I am still in recovery mode but making progress each day and reminded even on the days that are crappy — of God’s amazing and great faithfulness. He is so good! For those of you who have been with me every step of the way in this, thank you so much for all of the prayers and support. It means more than you will ever know. 🙂
