Like a River From its Course Book Review

About the book:
unnamed
Like a River from Its Course (Kregel, June 2016)

An epic novel exposing the ugliness of war and the beauty of hope.

The city of Kiev was bombed in Hitler’s blitzkrieg across the Soviet Union, but the constant siege was only the beginning for her citizens. In this sweeping historical saga, Kelli Stuart takes the reader on a captivating journey into the little-known history of Ukraine’s tragedies through the eyes of four compelling characters who experience the same story from different perspectives.

Maria Ivanovna is only fourteen when the bombing begins and not much older when she is forced into work at a German labor camp. She must fight to survive and to make her way back to her beloved Ukraine.

Ivan Kyrilovich is falsely mistaken for a Jew and lined up with 34,000 other men, women, and children who are to be shot at the edge of Babi Yar, the “killing ditch.” He survives, but not without devastating consequences.

Luda is sixteen when German soldiers rape her. Now pregnant with the child of the enemy, she is abandoned by her father, alone, and in pain. She must learn to trust family and friends again and find her own strength in order to discover the redemption that awaits.

Frederick Hermann is sure in his knowledge that the Führer’s plans for domination
are right and just. He is driven to succeed by a desire to please a demanding father and by his own blind faith in the ideals of Nazism.

Based on true stories gathered from fifteen years of research and interviews with Ukrainian World War II survivors, Like a River from Its Course is a story of love, war, heartache, forgiveness, and redemption.
My Thoughts:
This book is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. A compelling, deep, and complex story that had me reading for hours. At times the story was hard to read because it was so sad, but I still could not put it down.
The author intrigues the reader immediately by the perspectives she gives through three Ukrainian characters and one Nazi. Each of their stories are intense as they are dealing with how the tragedies around them are affecting them personally. Also, this book was a history lesson for me as I learned so much about Ukraine and their history during WWII. Beyond the moving storylines the author provides rich and informative details about what was actually happening during that time. If you haven’t read it yet, please add this to your summer reading list. You won’t be sorry. I find myself continuing to look for more books by Stuart but this is only her first one. I hope to read much more from this author in the future and I am already looking forward to what her next book will be.

Jilted Book Review

About the book:

unnamed
Jilted (David C. Cook, June 2016)

Lynda Turner has struggled with depression since her husband abandoned her and their young daughter fifteen years ago.

Yet unexpected hope awakens when a local ex-convict shows interest. As long-hidden secrets resurface, Lynda must fight for her emotional stability and for a life where the shadow of shame is replaced by the light of love.

Jilted tells of a woman who has lost the joy of living, a man determined to draw her back toward happiness, and a town that must—once and for all—leave the past where it belongs. It is a gentle reminder that all things can work together for good.

My Thoughts:
Jilted is the third book in The Mended Heart Series by Denman. Before this latest release I was not familiar with this series but now I am a huge fan. The author has a way of drawing the reader in and grips at the heart strings from the page one. This book is a story of a woman who has dealt with heartbreak and depression and who is on a journey and hopes to find joy again. I laughed, cried, and prayed with this character and did not want the story to end. It truly is a story that shows that God truly does work out all things for His good. If you need a new series to read this summer I highly recommend this one. You want be sorry.

Hidden Agendas Book Review

About the book:unnamed-1

Hidden Agendas: Dropping the Masks that Keep Us Apart (New Growth Press, May 2016)

We like to pretend that hidden agendas are just for self-important bosses or egotistical politicians, but we all have them. Deep down, we all have a secret plan for getting from where we are to where we want to be, even if we refuse to admit it to ourselves.

And if our hidden agendas aren’t enough, we wear masks to obscure the truth even more. We put on these masks—like religion, appearance, power, politics, or protection—to drive our agendas. But all of this leaves us feeling phony, ashamed, guilty, and afraid. It’s killing us and hurting those we love. But for most of us, it will be a cold day in a hot place before we will be fully honest with anyone else.

There is so much more to life than hiding, pretending, and never being loved. In fact, there is already one person who sees behind the masks we wear and the hidden agendas that drive us. It does no good to tell God that you’re sick when you’re drunk, that you love him when you don’t, or that you didn’t steal and eat an apple (with apple juice dripping down your chin). God always recognizes and loves the “you” behind the mask.

So what can we do about the hidden agendas we have and the masks we wear? How can we gather the courage to be real? “Being real” has to start with your relationship with your heavenly Father. God already knows you inside and out. But God doesn’t know you in order to “out” you to your friends. His unconditional love for his own is reason we can pray to our Father without fear of rejection or judgment. Knowing God’s love, knowing that your heavenly Father is for you not against you is the only reason to give up your masks and develop the type of authentic relationships you never thought you could have.

My Thoughts:

This book was a good and challenging read from Pastor Steve Brown. In the book Brown addresses the masks we tend to wear and how that affects who we are as Christians as well as how it affects others. Wearing these masks that he discusses in his book also hinders in our relationship with Christ an from being who God wants us to be. This book is one that everyone needs to read. It will challenge you to examine the hidden masks you have in your own life. It may not be easy hearing what he has to say but it is worth it.

Sister Dear Book Review

About the book:
f33f4a9a-a415-46d8-8cc8-43ea035a6a43
Sister Dear (Thomas Nelson, April 2016)

All Allie Marshall wants is a fresh start. But when dark secrets refuse to stay buried, will her chance at a new life be shattered forever?

Convicted of a crime she didn’t commit, Allie watched a decade of her life vanish — time that can never be recovered. Now, out on parole, Allie is determined to clear her name, rebuild her life, and reconnect with the daughter she barely knows.

But Allie’s return home shatters the quaint, coastal community of Brunswick, Georgia. Even her own daughter Caroline, now a teenager, bristles at Allie’s claims of innocence. Refusing defeat, a stronger, smarter Allie launches a battle for the truth, digging deeply into the past even if it threatens her parole status, personal safety, and the already-fragile bond with family.

As her commitment to finding the truth intensifies, what Allie ultimately uncovers is far worse than she imagined. Her own sister has been hiding a dark secret—one that holds the key to Allie’s freedom.

My Thoughts:

“Sister Dear” is a page-turning suspense from Laura McNeill. The book begins with the main character Allie being released from prison for a murder she did not commit. While in prison her daughter Caroline becomes a teenager, her dreams of a successful career dies, and she loses the love of her life. Following her release, she enters back into a world where everyone doubts her and no one believes she is innocent including her own family. As the story unfolds the reader is taken back to what really happened, and is told the backstory and the point of view of each character. As Allie tries to discover the truth the reader is in suspense until the very end. This book will keep you up at night because you won’t be able to put it down, and is a must read. I cannot wait for Laura’s next book.

Secrets and Lies. Danger That Will Never Go Away.
Join Three Beloved Masters of Romantic Suspense for Novellas Where the Past Will Not Stay Buried.

Dee Henderson – “Missing”

Dani Pettrey – “Shadowed”
Adventure, romance, and danger collide when a young Alaskan fisherman nets the body of a Russian open water swimming competitor. Another swimmer, who’d been the dead woman’s roommate years ago, is pulled into the search for answers as it grows more and more clear that something sinister is at play.

Lynette Eason – “Blackout”
A young woman once implicated in a robbery gone wrong finds herself at risk years later when the real culprit is up for parole. The loot taken that night has never been found and he believes she knows where it’s hidden–only her memory of that night has always been unreliable. Can she remember enough to find her way to safety?

My Thoughts:

Sins of the Past is a book of stories by some of my favorite authors. When I first saw this book I was immediately intrigued even before I knew what it was about.  The book consists of three novellas . The first one is titled “Missing” by Dee Henderson and is the perfect opener for the book. Dee’s story is a page turner as always .The second one is called “Shadowed” by a Dani Pettrey. If you have read Dani’s other books you will recognize the main characters of this one being from the well-known McKenna family. Just like all of her other books, Pettrey has the reader hooked from the beginning. The last book in the series is called “Blackout” by Lynette Eason and takes the reader on a journey of Macy’s past and what she experience when she was a teenager.

This book is a must read for those who enjoy romantic suspense.

The Mother Letters Book Review

61j98q32hjL

My Thoughts:

The Mother Letters by Amber and Seth Haines is a must read for moms out there. I am not even a mom and they encouraged me. The idea for this book started out as a gift that Seth gave his wife Amber one year for Christmas. He contacted several women who were her mentors, and  ladies whose blogs encouraged her and asked them to write letters to her uplifting and giving her advice on motherhood. They agreed, and many of those letters is what formed this book. Each one of these letters offers an inspiring word of faith, a breath of fresh air, a respite, and a laugh for the mom who needs a break. If you are friends with a new mom this would make a great gift for her.  I look forward to reading more from this couple!

Her One and Only Book Review

About the Book:

38b7a7cc-ac22-45f8-8f0c-2d2c31b6500f

Her One and Only (Bethany House, May 2016)

After ten years in the NFL, super star Gray Fowler is accustomed to obsessive fans.

But when Gray starts receiving death threats from a stalker, his team hires an executive protection agency to guard him until the culprit is caught. Dealing with bodyguards 24/7 is a headache, especially when one of them is a young, beautiful woman. How can a female half his size possibly protect him better than he can protect himself?

Dru Porter is a former Marine, an expert markswoman, and a black belt—none of which saved her from disaster on her last assignment. In order to rebuild her tarnished reputation, she’s determined to find Gray’s stalker and, since relationships between agents and clients are forbidden, avoid a romantic attachment between herself and the rugged football player with the mysterious past.

Yet every secret that leads Dru closer to the stalker also draws her closer to Gray. As the danger escalates, they’ll survive only if they can learn to trust their lives—and their hearts—to one another.

My Thoughts:

Wade’s fourth and final book in the Porter Family Series does not disappoint. It includes all the qualities Becky’s novels are known for – drama, humor, mystery, romance, and faith. I loved the back and forth banter of Dru and Gray, and enjoyed watching the progression of their relationship. Their relationship started out professional but turned personal, and I enjoyed learning each of their stories along the way. In my opinion this book was better than the last one, and it was a perfect way to close out the series. I am eagerly awaiting Wade’s next book. If her next one comes close to this one, it will not disappoint.

Traces of Guilt Book Review

218866About the Book:

She’s turning up the heat on Carin County’s cold cases . . .
Evie Blackwell loves her life as an Illinois State Police detective . . . mostly. She’s very skilled at investigations and has steadily moved up through the ranks. She would like to find Mr. Right, but she has a hard time imagining how marriage could work, considering the demands of her job.

Gabriel Thane grew up in Carin County and is now its sheriff, a job he loves. Gabe is committed to upholding the law and cares deeply for the residents he’s sworn to protect. He too would like to find a lifetime companion, a marriage like his parents have. . . .

When Evie arrives in Carin, Illinois, it’s to help launch a new task force focused on unsolved crimes across the state. She will work with the sheriff’s department on a couple of its most troubling missing-persons cases. As she studies old evidence to pull out a few tenuous new leads, she unearths surprising connections. One way or another, she knows Gabriel Thane and his family will be key to the answers she seeks.

My Thoughts:

Dee Henderson has been one of my favorite authors for years. While I don’t enjoy her newer books like I did some of her earlier ones, I still loved this new release. Traces of Guilt contained very intricate storylines  and it was very interesting to see how all the stories related throughout the book. Henderson definitely keeps the reader in suspense until the end which I appreciate. One quality that I like about all of her books is her ability to keep you intrigued. There were a large cast of characters in the story and a few of my favorite characters from her previous books made appearances and it was neat to see how all of their individual stories worked together. Gabriel and Evie had a nice connection as they worked together to solve cases, and I look forward to learning even more about them in future books. I am already excited for her next book. If you are a fan of a good mystery and of Dee Henderson, this book is a must read for you.

Fading Starlight Book Review

About the Book:

A Tale of Unexpected Friendship and Old Hollywood Glamour

Lauren Summers is hiding. Her fashion house internship should have launched her career, but a red carpet accident has left her blackballed. The only job she finds is unpaid, but comes with free lodging–a run-down cottage in the shadow of a cliff-side mansion. Unsure of what comes next, she’s surprised to be contacted by a reporter researching a reclusive former Hollywood ingénue who lives in the nearby mansion.

Kendall Joiner wants Lauren’s help uncovering the old woman’s secrets. In return, she’ll prove the red carpet accident was a publicity stunt so Lauren can regain her former job. With all her dreams in front of her, Lauren’s tempted by the offer, but as she and the old woman get to know each other, Lauren realizes nothing is quite as it seems.

My Thoughts:

This book is a delightful read by Kathryn Cushman. At the beginning you meet a fashion designer named Lauren whose internship with a major designer goes bad after a dress disaster at the VMAs. Following that, Lauren takes a position as costume designer for a school play, and moves into a rundown mansion while its being remodeled. In doing this she begins an unexpected journey with a reporter uncovering the mysterious past of Hollywood Starlet Charlotte Montgomery. In the process she learns more about herself and forms some unlikely friendships. The characters in this story were amusing, and the Hollywood history and the hint of romance kept me turning the pages. This will not be my last book by Cushman, and I am already looking forward to reading the next one she releases.
