Advent

Tis The Season With Katherine Reay

I’m so excited to get to share a Christmas tradition with you all… Christmas is my favorite time of year and I have so many. The music starts November 1; the decoration happens the day after Thanksgiving; a gift gets opened on Christmas Eve; stories are read; movies watched; daily Advent readings are read… There’s a lot of wonder and delight this time of year. But one of my favorite traditions isn’t mine; it is my aunt’s.

My aunt gives each of my children a book every year. It’s a beautiful tradition and the books my aunt selects are treasures, such as The Secret Garden, in which the drawings are as exquisitely wrought as the words. Gorgeous picture books like Eilenberg and Barrett’s Beauty and the Beast and McClure’s Tom Finger have now given way to spectacular editions of The Wind in the Willows, The Phantom Toll Booth, Heidi, Little Women and others. And my kids, who regard most things as having the life span of deli meats or an iPhone App, adore these books, savor their words and pictures, shelve them in special corners of their rooms, and anticipate next year’s gift.

Each Christmas morning, I watch and smile. I never say much because that is the surest way to end the magic – by endorsing it.  But these stories are changing my children, year by year. They are invited into new tales of adventure, new worlds and new ways of looking at life, relationships and humanity. They are also invited into a deeper relationship with a great-aunt – and that’s transformative too.

So there is my Christmas tradition – one that’s grown over the years in a beautiful moment of love and literature, across the generations, at the “most wonderful time of the year.”

About The Author: Katherine Reay is the bestselling and award-winning author of Dear Mr. Knightley, Lizzy & Jane, The Bronte Plot, A Portrait of Emily Price, and The Austen Escape. All Katherine’s novels are contemporary stories with a bit of classical flair. She holds a BA and MS from Northwestern University and is a wife, mother, rehabbing runner, former marketer, and avid chocolate consumer. After living all across the country and a few stops in Europe, Katherine now happily resides outside Chicago, IL.

Advent, Articles

Tis the Season

Hi friends. I’ve been a bit behind with blog posts over the past few weeks. I’m currently doing an advent post each week and posted that one earlier. However, I am also doing a series called Tis the Deason over the next week with guest bloggers sharing what they like about Christmas. You are going to love them.
I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season and that it is not a stressful time but a time of rest and be thankful for who Jesus is and what He has done for you over the past year. Happy almost Christmas!

Advent

Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room – Peace

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” ~Isaiah  9:6
I am late in getting this advent post up because I have literally been in bed sick with cold/flu as well as a bladder infection since last Monday. I am heading to the doctor tomorrow, but I am just now able to see through the fog a bit.
One of my favorite descriptions of Christ that we hear often during the holiday season is “Prince of Peace.” Jesus is the author of peace and gave His life on the cross and rose again so that we could experience His peace for eternity. What an amazing gift! Certain seasons of life can weigh you down, and everything around you can be a chaotic mess, but that is when God’s peace shines through the most.
Throughout my life I have read the phrase — “Peace beyond my understanding” that comes from Philippians 4 numerous times. However, over  the past year I have truly understood that statement. Especially in the last few months. This past year has been the hardest of life. I feel like everything that I once knew has been stripped away. My health. My home. My job. Even my friendships have changed. I feel like nothing has remained the same — except for Jesus.
My favorite missionary, Amy Carmiachel, who was also bedbound  for years made the statement, “In acceptance lieth peace,” and that has been the reminder I have needed lately. To clarify , this type of acceptance doesn’t mean for one to give up, it just means we should accept circumstances for today and and trusting a God to see you through.  Trials are hard and they are even harder when there is no peace. I am now experiencing this  peace in my life, and it is a miracle from God. Some of my hardest days have been some of my sweetest times with Jesus.  Does this mean my circumstances have changed or that I don’t get emotional some days and cry out to God in the midst of my suffering? No, but this peace helps me to endure and to live each day with a sense of joy instead of bitterness.
In addition to healing my main prayer to God each day is that He gives my family and I peace. Being sick and under the care of Hospice I never know how things will Be from one day to the next so I want to live each day enjoying the time I have with family and not worrying about what is ahead.
During this Christmas season, I am thanking God for His peace that seems impossible to the world but possible through His son Jesus who was born of a virgin and would grow up to be the Savior of the world.  I am more thankful and aware of this peace more than ever before and that has been the best gift I have ever received.

Advent, Articles, Holidays, Let it Be Christmas

Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room – Hope

Hi friends! I’ve had every intention to write a new advent post each week that should have started last Sunday. I’ve posted on Advent the past two years and I was hoping to write new posts for the series this year. However, due to health problems and a chronic bladder infection that has caused me severe pain over the past few weeks, I have not had the energy to write anything new. The first week of advent is all about hope and I need to be reminded of the hope of Christ now more than ever.

The one truth that can be depended on no matter how hard circumstances may be is the hope of Christ never fails. No situation is too dark to keep the hope of Christ from shining through.

[clickToTweet tweet=”No situation is too dark to keep the hope of Christ from shining through.” quote=”No situation is too dark to keep the hope of Christ from shining through.”]Allow is light to shine through and let every heart prepare Hin room.

Hope a Little More!

Below is my post. Be encouraged today friends and check back tomorrow for the next post in the series.

I think of Christ, I automatically think of the word hope, and His hope could not be any more evident than at Christmas time. Merriam Webster’s Dictonary defines hope as: “to cherish a desire with anticipation, or to “expect with confidence.” Advent is a perfect example of this type of hope, and the ultimate hope that we have in life that comes from Christ.

Advent means “coming,” as in “Christ is coming.” It represents the expectation, anticipation, and preparation of the birth of Jesus. Jesus was born as fully God and fully man, and as the King of Kings was born in a lowly manger to identify with us. He came for us so that we may have the hope of Eternal life, and to live and reign in our hearts. His coming fulfills the Old Testament prophecies such as Jeremiah 33:14-16 which states, “The days are coming, ’declares the LORD, ‘when I will fulfill the good promise I made to the people of Israel and Judah. In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. This is the name by which it will be called: The LORD Our Righteous Savior.’”

This hope is also mentioned in Romans 15:12-13 — “And again, Isaiah says, The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; the Gentiles will hope in him. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

This year more than ever in my life, I am thankful for the hope that comes from the Lord. 2015 would have been filled with many hopeless days had it not been for the hope that I have found in Jesus. I have dealt with a lot of health problems, and there have been many days this year where to the world all hope would have seemed lost, but no matter what circumstances I face in this life, I will ALWAYS have hope because of the Savior. That truth has got me through many hard days, and I pray if you are facing an overwhelming situation or if life seems too much to bear that you dwell on the hope that Jesus gives.

The holidays can be a busy time filled with lots of fun and celebrations, or for some a time that is overwhelming or a sad reminder of what they do not have. However, it is so easy to lose focus of who should receive our utmost attention during the season. My prayer for this Christmas is that we would make room for the Savior in our lives and give Him the honor that He deserves
